Get To Know Dr. Emily Smythe
Dr. Smythe takes pride in providing the highest quality oral surgery care with technology and compassion. Through continuing education, she is committed to staying abreast of the latest technology and techniques to predictably provide the best outcomes. She is dedicated to making her patients feel at ease and comfortable. When asked what her favorite part about being an oral surgeon is, she said, “relieving people of pain, calming their anxiety, and giving them options to restore their mouths”. She genuinely looks forward to caring for her patients and partnering with the general dentists and specialists in the community.
Her academic career began at Ohio Wesleyan University where she excelled in academics and sports. In 2002, Dr. Smythe was awarded an Academic All American status in swimming. Her undergraduate education culminated with a BA at Ohio Wesleyan University where she was Phi Beta Kappa and graduated in 2003 Summa Cum Laude.
Dr. Smythe went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2007. She was proudly given the Dr. George B. Clendenin Award from the International College of Dentists in 2004 which is awarded to the highest ranked dental student.
During her years at the University of Maryland, Dr. Smythe was inducted into the Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontic Honor Society. She was OKU National Dental Honor Society, and in 2007 was awarded the Academy of General Dentistry Award.
Dr. Smythe completed her residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin after an internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Wisconsin and a General Practice Dental residency at Evanston Northwestern Hospital. She is a contributing author to several chapters in oral surgery and plastic surgery literature and has compassionately performed volunteer dental care to the underserved people in rural areas of the Dominican Republic and with Mission of Mercy in Wisconsin.
Dr. Smythe is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Surgery. She's a past president of the Chicago Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is also a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Illinois Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, American Dental Association, and Chicago Dental Society. Dr. Smythe is certified by the American Heart Association in ACLS and PALS and as an instructor in Basic Life Support.
In her free time, Dr. Smythe loves spending time with her husband and 2 energetic sons. She loves to be outdoors and enjoys running, swimming, cheering on her kids, attending sporting events, and traveling.
